About the programme

This English-taught programme trains you as an expert in cultural heritage conservation by applying an interdisciplinary approach that incorporates the study of chemistry, physics, biology, computer science and geology. The programme prepares you to use modern restoration and conservation technologies as well as design new ones, and equips you with the knowledge and experience you need to plan and execute prevention and maintenance projects and to study artefacts in a conservational context. Since the study programme emphasises hands-on experience, you will get to practice what you are learning in a city that is exceptionally rich with artistic and cultural heritage.

Career opportunities

As a graduate, you will be a trained conservation scientist, a technical and scientific expert in the conservation of cultural heritage, so you’ll be ready to launch a career with both public and private organisations as well as businesses and laboratories specializing in restoration and conservation. Possible career opportunities include:

  • Museum technician
  • Restorer
  • Cultural consultant
  • Restoration technology development

The programme also allows you to continue your studies with a doctorate in chemistry.

Programme structure

The programme’s two-year study plan is designed to train you as an expert in the diagnostics and conservation of cultural heritage, so the course work provides a solid interdisciplinary scientific background that combines chemistry, physics, biology, computer science and geology. Some of the courses involved are:

  • Analytical Methods and Applications
  • Computer Science Applications in Cultural Heritage
  • Geology Applied for Cultural Heritage
  • Innovative Materials for Conservation
  • Experimental Design and Statistics
  • Research Methods for Archaeology

The programme also requires that you complete a thesis and carry out a curricular internship, which ensures that you get some work experience before you graduate. It is also possible to carry out one or two semesters of the programme abroad through one of the university’s many international exchange programmes.
